Cable Check Socks
By Karen (Wren) Hoyle

I designed these socks for my daughter who likes to hike and wanted a bit heavier sock but nothing too bulky. I used Brown Sheep's sport weight Nature Spun, 100% wool yarn in a heathered gray. I think the
cable crosses would have shown up better with a non-heathered yarn and the next pair I knit will be with a light, solid color. The pattern is an easy 10 rnd repeat that can be continued unto the instep or stopped
at the heel. The pattern has a checker board effect with small cables and would be appropriate for men or women.

Gauge:
6.5 sts/inch (this pattern has lots of stretch so a gauge between 6 or 7 sts/inch will work)

Cable Check Pattern:

rnd 1 purl
rnd 2  *K2, P2* to end
rnd 3 rep rnd 2
rnd 4 *C2F, P2* to end
rnd 5  *K2, P2* to end
rnd 6  purl
rnd 7 *P2, K2* to end
rnd 8 rep rnd 7
rnd 9 *P2, C2F* to end
rnd 10  *P2, K2* to end

Repeat these 10 rnds for pattern.

*C2F: Knit into the front of the second stitch on the left hand needle. Then knit the first stitch, slipping both stitches off the needle at the same time.

Leg:
CO 48 sts using your favorite method for socks. Divide sts unto 4 ndls, 12 sts on each ndl. The tail end of the CO yarn will be center back of your sock. Knit 1 1/2 inches of K2, P2 ribbing.
Start  cable check pattern with rnd 1.
Repeat 10 rnd pattern 3 times ending after rnd 1. This will give you a leg about 5 1/2-6 inches including ribbing. You may repeat more of the pattern for a longer leg. Be sure to end with either rnd 1 or 6. Knit across ndl 1. Stop, turn work and get ready for heel.

Heel:
The heel is worked on the 24 sts that are on ndl 1 and ndl 4 (12 sts from each ndl). The tail end of your CO yarn should be in the center of your heel. These 24 heel sts will be worked back and worth, not in the
round.
row 1: (wrong side of heel facing you) Sl 1 as if to purl, purl across row. Turn.
row 2: (right side of heel facing you) *Sl1 as if to knit, knit 1*across. Turn.
Repeats these 2 rows until heel is just shy of 3 inches. End by working a right side row.

Turning Heel:
Abbreviation SSK: Slip first st from left ndl unto right ndl as if to knit. Slip second st from left ndl unto right ndl as if to knit. Insert tip of left ndl from left to right into the 2 slipped sts and knit as one.
row 1: (wrong side facing you) P 14 sts, P2tog, P1. Turn, leave the remaining 7 sts unworked.
row 2: (right side facing you) Sl 1 as if to knit, K5, SSK, K1. Turn, leaving remaining 7 sts unworked.
row 3: Sl 1 as if to purl, P6, P2tog, P1. Turn. Leave remaining sts unworked.
row 4: Sl 1 as if to knit, K7, SSK, K1. Turn. Leave remaining sts unworked.
row 5: Sl 1 as if to purl, P8, P2tog, P1. Turn. Leave remaining sts unworked.
row 6: Sl 1 as if to knit, K9, SSK, K1. Turn. Leave remaining sts unworked.
row 7: Sl 1 as if to purl, P10, P2tog, P1. Turn. Leave remaining sts unworked.
row 8: Sl 1 as if to knit, K11, SSK, K1. Turn. Leave remaining sts unworked.
row 9: Sl 1 as if to purl, P12, P2tog. Turn.
row 10: Sl 1 as if to knit, K12, SSK. There should be 14 heel sts remaining.

Gusset:
With right side of your heel flap facing you, using a crochet hook, pick up 14 sts along left side of heel flap and slip unto a free needle. Pattern across 24 instep sts (you should be on row 2 of the cable check pattern). Using crochet hook, pick up 14 sts along right side of heel flap and slip unto a free needle, knit 7 sts from heel flap unto this needle. Slip remaining 7 heel flap sts unto the beg of the first needle with gusset sts. You should be back at the center heel with a total of 66 sts spaced like this:
Ndl 1: 21 sts (7 heel flap sts plus 14 gusset sts)
Ndl 2: 12 instep sts
Ndl 3: 12 instep sts
Ndl 4: 21 sts (14 gusset sts plus 7 heel flap sts)

rnd 1:  (ndl 1) Knit to the last 3 sts; K2tog, K1.
(ndl 2) pattern across continuing with cable check pattern
(ndl 3) pattern across continuing with cable check pattern
(ndl 4) K1, SSK, knit to end.

rnd 2:  (ndl 1) knit across
(ndl 2) continue cable check pattern
(ndl 3) continue cable check pattern
           (ndl 4) knit across

Repeat rounds 1 and 2 until only 12 sts remain on gusset needles. Total of 48 sts. If you don't want to continue the cable check pattern unto the foot, knit ndls 2 and 3 of both rounds.

Foot:
Work even [knitting sts on needles 1 and 4 (bottom of foot) and patterning sts on ndls 2 and 3 (instep)] until work measures 2" shorter than the length of your foot. End at center back, tail end of CO will be
between ndls 1 and 4 (center).

Toe:
rnd 1:  (ndl 1) Knit to last 3 sts, K2tog, K1.  (ndl 2) K1, SSK, knit to to end.  (ndl 3) Knit to last 3 sts, K2tog, K1.  (ndl 4) K1, SSK, knit to end.
rnd 2:  Knit.
Repeat rnds 1 and 2 for a total of 12 rnds until 24 sts remain. Then repeat just rnd 1 for 3 rnds until 12 sts remain. Distribute remaining 12 sts unto 2 needles, 6 from top of foot and 6 from sole. Graft together and bury threads.
