I used Caron Simply
Soft worsted weight acrylic yarn with size 2 needles (2.75mm) to give me a firm fabric
because I knit loosely. Most people us size 5 (4mm) to give them the same effect.
Gauge: 10 stitches = 2 inches in moss stitch
I also used 5 dp needles to help me keep my pattern straight.
Cast on 54 stitches. K1 P1 rib for one inch. Last row divide the stitches as
follows:
Needle #1 - 14
stitches
Needle #2 - 13 stitches
Needle #3 - 14 stitches
Needle #4 - 13 stitches
Cable pattern:
C6F = hold 3 stitches forward, K3, knit 3 stitches that were held forward
C6B = hold 3 stitches back, K3, knit 3 stitches that were held back.
The sections with 13
stitches will be a straight Moss stitch pattern:
K1, P1 for two rows, then P1, K1 for two rows
The sections with 14 stitches will have a cable as follows:
| Rows 1-4 | P1 | K12 | P1 |
| Row 5 | P1 | C6B/C6F | P1 |
| Rows 6-10 | P1 | K12 | P1 |
| Row 11 | P1 | C6B/C6F | P1 |
| Rows 12-16 | P1 | K12 | P1 |
| Row 17 | P1 | C6F/C6B | P1 |
| Rows 18-22 | P1 | K12 | P1 |
| Row 23 | P1 | C6F/C6B | P1 |
| Rows 24-28 | P1 | K12 | P1 |
I knit 2 more rows,
then had 4.5 inches for the ankle. My hubby likes the socks short, so that's where I
stop. Feel free to continue in pattern to desired length.
Work 9 inches in spiral pattern:
(at this point I went back to 4 needles - 18 stitches on each of three
needles).
| K | K | K | P | P | P |
| P | K | K | K | P | P |
| P | P | K | K | K | P |
| P | P | P | K | K | K |
| K | P | P | P | K | K |
| K | K | P | P | P | K |
Continue this spiral
pattern for 10 inches.
Decrease for toe:
K2, K2tog to end
Knit 1row straight
K1, K2tog to end
Knit 1 row straight
K2tog to end
K2 tog to end
Pull yarn through remaining stitches and tie off
