This book is a must-have! The author begins the book with a nice history on socks. Her explanations on the different ways to create heels and toes are very helpful. I knit my first pair from this book and found the pattern easy to understand. This is a great reference book and a great way to learn how to create your own patterns.

I loved this book.  I still love this book.  this book helped me improve my sock knitting technique.  the pictures are beautiful.  the diagrams are clear and informative.  if you are new to sock knitting, you should have this book.  I learned how to do several different toe styles.  I am still attached to my heel flap, so I am not as adventurous in this area.  just looking at the pictures is enough to inspire you to try something in this book.  the patterns run from the very basic to the complex.  something for everyone. and remember, even if we have been knitting one year or fifty years, we can always improve our technique and this book helps you do this.  I think you will love this book.

Even though I've haven't yet actually made a sock from a pattern in this book, I would recommend it to anyone looking for good information about the different types of heels and toes.  After reading about the different types, I now understand all of the options when I design socks from scratch.  In fact, after reading this book, that is how I usually do all my socks, because it taught me so much that I feel comfortable doing "my own thing".  Good reference book even if you don't use the patterns in it.

What a terrific resource!  This book gives highly detailed instructions for a variety of heels and toes, as well as many splendid patterns. Nancy's instructions are clear and easy to understand.  It's terrific to have a book that is more than just a resource for patterns, but also for techniques and historical background. This book is all that and more. If anyone is on the market for a new sock book, I highly recommend this one.

Comments: If I had to choose one book to take with me to that famous desert island---along with my dpns and sockyarn!--this would be it.  This is a compendium of techniques on toes and heels which is nothing short of wonderful.  I found the toe and heel that *actually fit* my own and my family's feet!  And, there are patterns, too...which are good, but the fact that the author has given us so many interchangeable parts to work with in our own designs (or 'unventions') is what makes this book so great.

 Best sock book I have ever read. The  info and chapters are all arranged so that you can understand the how and whys  creating a sock, and then begin to design your own.  The book's tone is that of fellow knitters sharing nfo over a cup of tea - chatty and full of purls of wisdom.  A Must for everyone's 'how-to" collection.
