Robin Dyes with Kool Aid
<yelling; cover your ears> I
DYED WITH K**LAID FOR THE FIRST TIME LAST NIGHT!!! The results are
*fabulous*. I dyed a skein of (what else?) Bartlettyarns 2-ply natural
with Cherry, mangoberry, orange, and "Oh Yeah Orange Pineapple," which
gave gorgeous warm yellows to oranges to pinky orange to dark red. What I
did: soup pot with 2" of tepid water and 2 glugs of vinegar; dunked
the yarn in, realized I needed more water, removed yarn, added more water; put
orange/pineapple in one side of the pot then realized the water was still
moving, so it would disperse evenly if I didn't DO something; plunked the yarn
in. Lifted the other side and threw some orange in the middle, then put
some mangoberry just along the edge without lifting the yarn, just skootching it
in a bit. Sprinkled
corresponding colors (dry) on top, leaving a few places where the yarn was not
pushed into the liquid, so would remain undyed. Pushed the stuff down with
a wire whisk, gently, occasionally, except for 2 spots: the undyed lump,
and the lump where I dumped--not sprinkled--a whole package of cherry.
Cooked on low for 30 min, covered, when the dye had exhausted. Uncovered it and
removed it from heat to cool. I only made it down to Pretty Warm Almost
Hot before I *had* to rinse it to see the results. I was so gentle because
i didn't want the colors to run all over each other and ruin the variegated
effect, but guess what? Not a bit of color rinsed out...it was set *fast*
on the fibers. The thing I'd do differently: maybe no one else would
notice, but I can see that I was *way too neat and careful about putting the
skein in the pot, so I'd just jumble it in next time. From undyed natural
through the palest yellow and all the way to a deep true red: "K3w1"
