As for the yardage needed...I'm guessing here but the yarn called for is fingering weight and that runs about 225 +/- yards per 50 Grams.
As for how the gauge was measured, I haven't a clue. entrelac does have a tendency to spread out a bit more than any surrounding stockinette stitch, so it will make a difference. But...which one should you use in your swatch?? I'm afraid we'll have to defer to Annabelle on that.
