The confusion seems to be between the border which is not el and the first row of recs. This is how it works. The border is in razor st;it zig zags like this /\/\/\/\ around. The k1 referred to is at the top of each repeat and if it is easier for the knitter, a marker may be placed on each of these. (there should be 8). The first row of recs nestle in between these points. When you finish 1 el rec you should find that the next st on the left hand needle is the k1. You are now ready to start the next rectangle. Each one starts with the k1 of previous round. Hope this is of help.
