Dear Annie; Instructions almost always read slip 1, knit 1, pass slip st over, (that is over the k1 in the instructions). This is meant to produce a left-leaning decrease, as opposed to k2together, which leans right. Try this with other yarn and needles and you will see what I mean. It is also important to remember that slipped sts are ALWAYS slipped as if to purl, unless the instructions say slip 1 knitways. The reason for slipping purlwise is to keep the slipped st from being twisted. As to keeping the correct # of sts in the round, place a marker on the k1 at beginning of each repeat around. there should be 14 sts from k1 to yo before next marker,(k1, yo, k5, Sl1, k2tog, psso, k5, yo). Hope this helps.
