Dear Gretchen: This is like knitting backwards, stange but possible. With wrong side of work facing you, put the point of the right hand needle into the work going from the knit side to the purl. (The tip of the needle will show on your side.) Wind your yarn once over the needle tip and pull it back through to the knit side. 1 st picked up and purled! Repeat 6 times more. As for those annoying holes --- they do occur in el, but the nature of el is to puff up and the holes tend to hide. If you still cannot stand them, try "creative fudgery". Add an extra st at the point when picking up and then decrease 1 st on first row to return to desired number of sts.
