Oh...you must be working the salt-and-pepper heel! Purling in two colors is a real pain, and you're right, you just have to figure out a way to do it and slog through. This is undoubtedly the reason that Norwegian and Shetland two-color sweaters are knitted in the round and cut for the armholes -- to avoid purling in color pattern!
Sorry I can't be more helpful, and if anyone else has an easy way to do it, I'd sure like to hear about it!
