Maybe the folks on the list would have some additional solutions to this, but my inclination would be the same as your first impulse--pick up fewer loops rather than try to compensate by changing the gusset shaping.
And if you think YOU'RE long-winded, wait til you see Lesson 4, which I'm writing now...
