Ack! You're right, that was a totally wierd way to express myself. Let's see if I can do better...
Once you have figured out where you have to begin in the chart in order to reach precisely the right place at point B, then it HAS to work out that the instep pattern and the sole pattern will meet up perfectly when the gusset stitches are all gone.
It does not matter WHERE you make the gusset decreases! You used point A as the spot to figure from in deciding how to place the sole pattern, but you can do the actual decreases anywhere. This pattern uses decreases at the standard place, which is two or three stitches away from point A. That's what doesn't matter. It will work out right in the end.
