I was so pleased with the way my socks turned out, that I am sharing this with you. Thanks to Deborah Pulliam (of Spin-Off fame) who shared her idea for 2/3 stitches for the heel. The fit is very nice, with less bunching at the ankle than with 1/2 stitches (IMHO). The original pattern was sent to the KnitDesign List a couple of weeks ago. I have adjusted the numbers to suit lighter weight yarn than Deborah's pattern. Yet Another Sock Pattern Size: fits size 8 women's shoe Materials: approx 3 - 4oz. Woolease or other DK or light-weight worsted, a couple of feet of contrasting yarn Needles: set of 4 - 3.75mm (5 US) double pointed needles Gauge: 6 stitches = 1" in stocking stitch (this makes a nice fabric - firm but not stiff) Cast on 48 stitches over three needles. Join, being careful not to twist stitches. Work k2, p2 rib for 6". This makes a nice foldover cuff, or you can wear it pulled up. Knit 2" around in stocking stitch. Knit 8 stitches, knit the next 32 stitches with contrasting yarn. Place these stitches back on the needles from which you just knitted them, and knit them again with the main yarn. (These stitches will be picked up later for the heel.) Continue knitting around for four and a half inches, or up to the bottom of big toe joint. Divide front and back with markers - 24 stitches between markers, with heel area centered. Begin toe decreases: *k1,ssk, knit to within three stitches of marker, k2tog, k1*, repeat from * to * once . Knit one round. Repeat these last two rounds until 20 stitches remain. Place 10 stitches on each of two needles and graft toe with kitchener stitch. Peasant Heel: Carefully remove scrap yarn, pick up and knit live stitches that are left, and pick up, twist and knit one stitch at one end to close gap, and two stitches at the other end - 66 stitches total. Knit two rounds. Work decreases as for toe, until there are 24 stitches left. Place 12 stitches on each of two needles and graft heel with kitchener stitch. Tidy any gaps at instep with a length of yarn. This makes a very comfortable sock, and is easy to do if you fear turning heels :). Does this count for my Christmas gift to the list? Happy knitting!
