Sideways Cuff Socks
Second Assignment:
Kitchener stitching or grafting
2. Practice/Learn Kitchener stitch. This may also be called grafting
and sometimes weaving. Knit up two practice swatches of several sts each
and several ridges of garter stitch [knit every stitch, knit every row] leaving
ndls in the last rows of each swatch for grafting practice. Do not break yarn.
[Note: instrux here are for grafting garter st, which is slightly different from
grafting stockinette stitch.]
Needles are held parallel in lh, tips to the right. Yarn should be
threaded through blunt needle and is coming off right end of one needle [I like
to have mine coming off the back needle of the pair].
You should see a row of purl 'bumps' just below the front ndl and a row of knit
'vees' facing you on the back ndl to make this come out right. You may need to
knit another row to make this setup right, which is why you didn't break the
yarn. If it still doesn't look right, turn it over facing the other way, it's
reversible.
Step One: [do step one only one time. Front ndl, enter first stitch as if to
purl, leave on ndl. Back ndl, enter first st as to purl, leave on ndl.
*Step Two. Front ndl, enter first st as if to knit, drop off needle. Enter
second st as if to PURL, leave on.
Step 3. Back ndl, enter first st as it to knit, drop off ndl. Enter second
st as if to PURL, leave on.*
Repeat from* to* [steps 2 and 3] until all sts are grafted and off the ndl. Your
very last sts will be knit, drop and there will of course be no ensuing purl.
Briefly
1. Prelim: front/purl/leave; far/purl/leave.
*2. front/KNIT, drop, purl/leave
3. back/KNIT, drop, purl/leave*
Practice the above techniques until you can do them easily. Then you will be
ready for Lesson One!
