2 sets of needles

Carol, OK, here's my first dumb question. When you say you knit on 2 sets of 5 needles, how do you do that? Do you knit one round on one set and then go to the other set, or...?

I've cast on, and have finished the cuff. I'm using some leftover Woolease in a navy sprinkle, and a rose, and made wide and thin stripes. I would like to try to make the main part of the sock blue with the heel and toe rose.
