Lesson Four  - The heel and work the foot.

Take a moment to measure the circumference of the foot that will wear this sock. With 80 sts at 9 sts per inch there are nearly 9 inches around. You may not want this size, so adjust to fit wearer. (circumference + ½  - 1 inch for ease). Knit 3 rounds, adjusting number of sts on first of these rnds.

If you have a favourite way of working the heel and foot, you will not need the rest of these instructions.

Re-inforced heel.

Divide the sts so that the first ndl has ½ the sts., give or take 1 st, as this must be an odd number. Put the rest of the sts on 2 ndls.(foot sts)

R1. (right side) K1, [slip 1, k1] to end of ndl, turn.

R2. K1, purl to last st, k1, turn.

Repeat these 2 rows for 2 ¼ inches, ending with R1 and omitting turn.

Turning the heel.

Purl to centre of heel plus 1 more st. (must be an even number). Sl1, k1, psso, k1, turn.

R2. P3, p2tog, p1, turn.

R3. K4, sl1, k1, psso, k1, turn.

R4. P5, p2tog, p1, turn.

R5. K6, sl1, k1, psso, k1, turn. Continue in this fashion until all sts have been worked. The number of sts will vary with the beginning number. You should end with a purl row.

Instep.

Put foot sts on 1 ndl and heel sts on 2 ndls.

Knit across first ndl and second ndl. Pick up and knit 1 st for every 2 rows along side of heel. K foot sts.  With another ndl pick up and k 1 st for every 2 rows along other side of heel and k sts from first heel ndl. You will now have ½ the heel sts and the instep sts on first ndl, the foot sts on second ndl, and the rest of the sts on last ndl.

Round 1. K to last 3 sts on first ndl, sl1, k1, psso, k1. Knit foot sts. Ndl3, k1, k2tog, k to end of ndl.

Round 2. Knit all sts.

Repeat these to rounds until there are the desired number of sts for foot. Continue without further shaping until foot is 2 inches less than desired length (from centre of back of heel).

Toe shaping:

Ndl 1. K to last 3 sts *sl1, k1, psso, k1*.

Ndl 2. K1, k2tog, k to last 3 sts, repeat * - *.

Ndl3. K1, k2tog, k to end of ndl.

K 3 rnds.

Repeat these 4 rnds until 29 or 30 sts remain.

K 1 rnd. Graft toe sts.

Finishing:

Sew in all ends. Wear with pride!
